whee camp!

Hi everyone. back from camp. whee

Camp has been an interesting experience for the NPC team. We have finally realised that we are quite dead for NPC.
Everything was too slow. Camp development, too slow. We had to shift the gateway. Our tent collapsed once and we had to shift that out and build another one. Gadgets mostly failed, we didn't build our baggage rack or our table and bench.

Pioneering, generally ok but we kinda ran out of ropes at 11am, and it was too slow (wth pioneering from 8-4?)

Backwoodsman was probably the most fail. We had at most 30% of required ingredients. We had no salt, sugar, pepper etc. as well as the 'special' ingredients we wanted like Dancing Chef pineapple rice paste. And we had no firewood.

But what was the most shocking was the Panther story. With Nick Eu as a leader, we had been getting about 4th for camps. As the Dec camp approached, everyone thought that Panther would die horribly as without me, Nick Eu and Joel our sec 1 there was no one with adequate skills left. Except maybe Gabriel our sec 1, and Eugene for his initiative. We thought that Jon Tan would just fail.

Or so we thought.

On the first day, the Panther tent was up within 30 minutes. The other patrols were still erecting their tents and the Panther people were standing around looking happy. I thought," Ok maybe Eugene and Jon Tan rushed them and they finished it quickly."

Then Panther won again, and again, and again. To such an extent that we got first for every event except cooking (where we got second). Out of a score of 200, we got 194. I'll add a list of the stuff that we did here:

Ironman. Michael (our slightly AP and kinda unfit sec 1) won Tat Hsiang (our Senior Patrol Leader) to the ultimate Ironman award.

Cooking. We got second.

Hike. We started out badly but eventually overtook the rest to reach the middle mark 2 mins ahead of the rest. We then finished 15 mins ahead.

Campfire. First (not really sure about this one).

Wargames. The NPC team rejoined for this one. We still got first.

VOJ. A series of stations with tasks. We got first.

The ventures were so surprised/pissed/wth'd I can picture them in the venture room throwing their proposals in the air and swearing.

This brings about the question of whether the NPC Panther people are actually helping or hindering the patrol. Time for some evaluation.

First, Nick Eu. His skills are way past anyone else in the troop. Skillswise, Nick owns everyone. You don't even need to do it, he just owns you before you start :P

But I feel his leadership skills are lacking. To compare him and Jon Tan:

Nick Eu: Michael, just do it! Don't waste time!
Jon Tan: Michael, quickly do it. [on further slacking on Michael's part] Oi, Michael. Do it.

Nick Eu shouts at you to do it, whereas Jon Tan makes you feel like doing it. Nick Eu also makes learning from him difficult. E.g:

Josh asking Nick to learn a simple knot which I should have learned a while ago and the response: Hey [Nick/Jon Tan], how to tie [so and so] knot?

Nick: I'm sure you don't know how to tie. So noob. You fail and you don't listen.
Jon: Um, sure. But try to remember it this time. I may not be around next time.

See? Not that I hate Nick Eu, but learning from him has become a thing which I fear as he just makes me feel like some random doad (is that even a word?). Jon Tan makes me feel as if it's ok, I'm human too. Although Nick Eu regularly checks on me like *hey are you ok, if not, fall out*

That's something that I have learned as a leader: Care and always try to be patient.

Time for me. God, this will take a total lack of modesty. But lots of honesty.

I think my skills are ok.

Gah, i'll continue another day. Got work to do.

Joshua (hellogoodbye! Camp Holadios! Get the pun?)

ha!

well hello I'm back. After a long period of inactivity. Well, maybe it's shorter than before, but what the heck.

NPC preparation has been really taxing on the team, especially the sec 2s. I mean, we have 9 gadgets to design and make materials for (think 42 0.3m sections of tacko). For those who don't know what tacko is, it's the bamboo pole that is commonly used for hanging laundry.

God, sawing sucks. I got 3 cuts.

But what really ticks me off the most is the other people on the team. I mean, it's the first time for us designing gadgets and we're basing all our designs on designs we have seen before. Then the sec 3s walk in, look through our gadgets and basically run around the room shouting," We're screwed! God save us! Sec 2s suck!"

I mean, if our gadgets are bad we can fix them but there is really no need to point, laugh and facepalm at our designs. Give us a break. We've been coming down for the past 3 days to saw, and how about you? None. You're getting the troop down to saw for you. Because you're all sec 3s, and you have the ability to, in the sense that you could just easily mobilise the PLs from your batch to disseminate the message. As for us, we have to plead and beg for 7 people to come down. And only like 5 people came.

I know some of the sec 3s have good intentions, but just take note of the fact that we are human too.

Phew, at least that's off my chest.

I did a random Google search on 'portal of musings', and found that my page was 4th. Hoorah, considering all my previous efforts to get other websites failed. Horribly. Like the way I fail at TF2 when it's not a LAN game and I end up killing 5 people in 1 life with a syringegun, or the way I fail at DotA when I lose sight of my Sand King after I burrowstrike into a mob of enemy players. Gah.

But on to other things, Barack Obama has won the US election. I hope he fixes the economy after 8 years of Bush randomness messing everything up (*cough* Iraq war *murmur* about freedom *hack*)

So, that's it for now!

Whee!

Joshua (omgzorz I permed the wrong skill on my DB in KOL! Nooooo.......)

troubles

hello all.

feeling soo tired. got 4 hrs of sleep on a holiday day. that's so impossible.

but it was because my brother got hospitalised. i wish he would do that less often.

His case is really interesting. Listen(or read):

He was riding his bicycle. He fell down. A week later he felt a strange pain in his butt. Yes, you read that right. So the pain gets worse and worse. He has to take painkillers. Then he feels he messed up his O-levels because of the pain. He can't concentrate.

His teacher tells us to go get it checked at A&E.

Apparently, he has an abcess near his tailbone. Think of it as a giant pimple. Painful.

Well, he just got operated on (to drain out the pus). Actually it's pretty funny if you think about it.

I'm so cruel. Or maybe it's just a lack of sleep.

02!

Well, well, well. Guess I'm really really bored.

As Russell aptly pointed out:" The first step to a post (an important position in the CCA) is to know what you want. Then you make it known. Then you make the choice obvious for others."

Well, I guess this is my reply Russell: A post is not the most important thing in life.

True true, a post does mean some form of recognition in the troop. A postless member eventually becomes quite a ghost in 02 (sorry). I can't deny that a post isn't something I wouldn't want.

But don't misunderstand me: I'm not like yearning to be SR or anything like that, I just want to be in a position where I can see the Sec 1s soon to be Sec 2s grow as leaders. Because RI is a special school, and 02 is a 'special special' CCA. (thanks for the quote Mr. Court)

Also because my batch of Sec 2s was the last batch to undergo seriously tough batch bonding. Yes. Let me give you an example of our December Camp bonding activities:

1) Rojak. Everyone strips off their shirts, throws them in a gigantic pile, and pulls on someone else's. Sounds fun from here, but not when it's 4 am and you've had less than 5 hrs sleep in the past 3 days and it's raining and the astroturf beneath you is soaked and you're really VERY scared of the J1 guy who's shouting at you. Not to mention you have 15 seconds.

2) Caterpillar. Everyone sits down, joins up legs (you sit cross-legged, then someone places his legs into your lap from behind and hooks them around your thighs) and then moves by pushing his hands onto the ground and lifting himself up and forward. Sounds fun but not when you're doing it for half an hour. Your thighs hurt like crap. Not to mention that the ground is soaked, so now your pants are soaked as well. And this is after rojak.

3) Dragon push-ups. Everyone knows what this is. Not easy with a batch of 15 people. Ow.

And the killer.

4) Conveyer belt. Everyone lies down in a row. The guy at the end rolls himself over all the others to reach the end. The conveyer belt of people then moves like that. VERY painful. You can't breathe. People jab you in the nuts and you try not to scream as screaming will lead to like 50 pushups for everyone. And this is after all the earlier activities.

As a result, our batch broke somewhere towards the end and we are now all the best of friends. Really. I couldn't imagine school life without Yong Xin, Ryan Seah, Sudeep (or supeed as we fondly call him), Kwang Ik, Ernest, Yen Min, Jun Yu, Alex (no seriously!), Peng Yun and all my other batchmates. Sports CCAs, you may call us 'gay' but we have the friendship that you will NEVER HAVE. Eat that.

I wish the Sec 1s would have this kind of intensive killer bonding but nowadays punishments are lax. Sigh.

So as for the post question, I don't really mind whatever post I get. PL, APL, even postless. As long as I get to bring the Sec 1 batch together As One.

Sounds really mighty, now that I read through the post but that's really what it is.

revival

Hello! Time to revive the blog, following the long spate of events e.g. Drama Challenge, EOYs etc.
This is going to be some super long post, so go grab a cup of Milo or coffee or whatever you drink first.

Ok. Let's start with Drama Challenge.
What's Drama Challenge? For those who are not in RI, Drama Challenge is a project where you take a particular scene of Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice and modify it for a modern audience.

So we all went along, coming up with a simply hilarious script (There were those that said it was 'retarded and lame' but they're all uncivilised barbarians). The final cast was:
Uday Duggal: Bassanio.
Uday is a very gifted actor. And I mean really gifted. Without him our play would have fallen apart.

Me: Portia
Yes, I know, acting as a girl. What can I do? I mean, it's the second most important role, and I'm the second best actor in class (or so I hope), so...

Rui Jun: Gratiano
Rui Jun really tries very hard, and I applaud him with the deepest respect. Although he does have some slight pronunciation problems, coming from a Chinese family background. (We don't blame him)

Lih Khuang: Nerissa
Lih Khuang tries too, but I wish he was less playful and more focused at rehearsals.

6 random guys: Guards/Escorts
They're the guards of Portia's house. And the escorts. NO, NOT SOCIAL ESCORTS!

So it was all fine and dandy (fine, maybe it wasn't but it wasn't terrible either). The Sounds and Lights people were all novices. Like first-timers. So I don't blame them for their inexpertise.

The day of the performance came. People looked at us with expectant looks (or maybe it was because I was in a flouncy dress). Then our turn to perform arrived.

The sounds people screwed up. Big time. The sounds didn't play. Not ONE of them was played at the right time. And the lights didn't fade out or in as required. This was especially pronounced at the end, when we were all waiting for the lights to fade out for our exit. I had to improvise an exit line: "Well then, we'll leave you [Gratiano and Nerissa] to your own devices. Come on then, Bassanio." Uday caught on, saying, "Yes, before Morocco comes." THEN the lights faded.

We forgave them after anyway because the audience said they didn't notice a thing. *phew*
However, it was a splendid performance. The whole audience loved it and they laughed and clapped at our most splendid jokes ("Ward him [Morocco] off with the finger [the ring finger], Bassanio!")

Then the moment of truth arrived: The oral defense. Uday and a few other guys went up for this one. Me and the other actors were backstage.

Then Mrs Suhaimi said into the microphone:" Your class has violated two major rules. Firstly, you have changed the script to modern English. Secondly, you have changed the scene. Explain yourself."

This came as quite a shock to us.

Ok, maybe more than that. We were like WTHHFHFHH!HHTHSHAKJHLUKGH^*&^(&*TG*OEG*&V!&. Let me explain why.

Our relief teacher, Mr. Siva, though claiming to be in 'correspondence' with the other teachers, gave the ok to our script which was in modern English. So we naturally felt quite wronged as he had unwittingly compromised our marks. Personally, I don't think he did it intentionally but he could have made sure before telling us.

Then for the scene-change. What the teachers didn't understand was that the enture THEME of the play was CONTRAST! See, in the play, Portia is racist. She hates Indians (such as the Prince of Morocco, whom she despises for his skin colour). So, we decided to create a large contrast: Portia and Nerissa (her serving-maid) are prim and proper individuals who are very traditional (thus the flouncy dresses), whereas Bassanio is a flirtatious, impatient, and stunningly modern Indian (who is wearing a suave suit and long pants and sunglasses). So thus two different 'time-zones' is created: one with Portia and Nerissa, the other with Bassanio and Gratiano. Then we further this contrast by actively pulling Portia and Bassanio to the same side of the stage. What the teachers thought was that we changed the scene because of this. It is not their fault, rather, it is Mr. Siva's fault yet again. The moment you change the language, characterisation will inevitably change. If not then the play's content would be irrelevant to its language and therefore its audience.

So we were all devastated. Not to mention a terribly done advertisement and flyer (what was those committees doing??)

so thats that for the drama challenge. whew, i need to stop speaking in good english for a while.

so then many random things happened (we went hunting for Mrs. Suhaimi, we hunted Mr. Siva down etc.) But on the bright side, the teachers now recognise me as a respectable English force! Whee! (as well as a good actor)

then the EOYs were around the corner! Massive amounts of mugging. I think I did like 8 hours of mugging on a good day.

Not much to say for EOYs, so.

Anyway, i'll be churning out an 02 post soon, so stick around!

Joshua (and no, its 'Porshua', not 'Joshia').

hey i'm back

Sorry for the long period of inactivity, was very busy.

Ok then! back to the story of my life.

As you probably know, I'm in NPC. Interesting choice the teachers made, having 4 sec 2s and 2 sec1s and 3 sec 3s. The sec 3s wanted a sec 2 as a reserve, not a sec 1.

Me, Ernest, Yongxin and Yenmin are the sec 2s. Guess who the reserve is?

probably me XD. But to quote Koon," Just enjoy the chance". Well, it's a great opportunity to catch up on scouting skills and it'll probably be a great experience. And there are CCA points :P

Next, Dramafeste.

The MCs rocked, if a little gay (Swee Heng! XD). Hullett's play was EXCELLENT. We won 5 of 7 awards. And we had a joint best play with Bayley, which was actually quite irritating because everyone knows we owned Bayley (sry to any Bayleans reading this, but yes it's true)

*sigh* so many things to do. And my english teacher isn't helping either:

Quote:" I know that your English CCT is on Thursday. You want to know what's tested. Well, I haven't the faintest clue. *WTH!!!?!?!?! want us to fail is it* Let me hazard a guess: They will give a passage and you will answer questions *O RLY?! I could never have guessed*."

Ok, thats it for now. Come back more often!!

Josh(and sec 2 bio is porn, yucks)

EDIT: Just changed my tag thingy. the other one sucked big time.

i'm really tired. so much work to do

Then mr. siva just gave us the project we were supposed to have received before the june hols. And we have to pass it up in 4 days time. OMG (gosh)

Then ms. chor repeated 'double-click' or more accurately, 'dable- CRIK' like 5 times in a row. So annoying. And we had to tell her what to do for the lesson. She doesn't know Flash for nuts.

Well then, that's life i guess.

Still thinking about the 4 girls poem.

And Rui Jun dug into my phonebook and found some girl contacts. What, can't I have some p6 contacts? anything wrong? zz.

o rly?

XD love this one

this really takes the cake KEKEKE

a beautiful poem

maggie and milly and molly and may

by e.e. cummings

maggie and milly and molly and may
went down to the beach (to play one day)

and maggie discovered a shell that sang
so sweetly she couldn't remember her troubles and

milly befriended a stranded star
whos rays five languid fingers were

and molly was chased by a horrible thing
which raced sideways while blowing bubbles and

may came home with a smooth round stone
as small as a world and as large as alone

for whatever we lose (like a you or a me)
its always ourselves we find in the sea

I'm obssessed with this poem. It's simply beautiful.

I wish I could write like this.

You know, if you reflect further, you find that the 4 girls might possibly be women discovering themselves. Think about it.

goals

ok goals! though i doubt my readership

1) Finish learning all scout skills. I really think this is important for me.

Check back every so often for a new post!
